Defining Moments in Our Lives
Pastor Rick White
Retired Pastor Bill Hybels, Founding Pastor of the Willow Creek Community Church in Barrington, IL, coined the phrase, “Defining Moments” a number of years ago. This short phrase has helped many define those times in our lives when God’s direction and sometimes His voice spoke very loudly to us. Whether it is a time when we are serving God, or right in the middle of our prayer time or even through the actions or words of another person, God spoke and we discerned it was His intervention.
Hybels went so far as to write a book entitled The Power of a Whisper: Hearing God. Having The Guts To Respond, sharing a number of times when God was extraordinarily active in his life and soul. “Without a hint or exaggeration,” says Pastor and author Bill Hybels, “the ability to discern divine direction has saved me from a life of sure boredom and self-destruction. God’s well-timed words have redirected my path, rescued me from temptation and re-energized me during some of my deepest moments of despair.”
God has allowed me to have a number of Defining Moments in my life leading up to my decision to become a Pastor and many times since that date. This coming weekend, I will be sharing one such time when I was teaching a class during VBS in our Church in Carmel, Indiana.
One of the 11 adult students took me down a path of sharing and teaching I had not planned for. When that teaching opportunity presented itself, 1 Peter 3:15 became one of my life verses and was one of the strongest defining moments in my life.
“But in your hearts, set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” 1 Peter 3:15
I would like to share with you about that class, so please join me this Sunday morning, July 8that 9:45 and 11:30 and I will tell you the rest of the story.
