What is LifePoint University and why should YOU attend?
What is LifePoint University and why should YOU attend? Look, I know that the idea of taking a class can be intimidating and off-putting for some people. Some of us just flat out hate school and have such horrible experiences with it that the idea of voluntarily going to school at church is nuts. I am one of those people—I promise! I love learning, but I hate school, but as Christians, we have a duty to learn as much as we can about our God and our faith. We have given LifePoint University much thought and care and the vision is not to overwhelm you work or make things so challenging you feel worse after the classes than you did before!
Why do we need to have book learning as Christians, don’t we just need the Bible? Yes, we need the Bible and it is the inerrant word of God, but we also need to be equipped to understand what we claim to believe. For example, if you have children or friends who ask you why God allows evil in the world if he’s such a good God, can you answer it? If someone asks you to explain why the Bible is reliable as not just the word of God but as a historical document, can you do that? Do you know how the 66 books of the Bible were chosen to be part of the Bible? What about Bible translation and transmission, how did that happen and can we be sure of what we read? What about all the things that are in our world today that aren’t mentioned in the Bible, how do we address these things? Science has proven the Bible to be wrong in many ways, right? How did Christianity start?
In many places throughout the Bible, we see examples of academic-like learning and we are called to meditate on the Word of God. Part of that meditation is learning about the things in the Bible, surrounding the Bible, and proclaimed by Christianity. In Daniel 1:17 we see an example of God gifting Daniel, Azariah, Mishael, and Hananiah with “knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning.” In Ephesians 4, Paul tells us that Christ gave teachers to equip His people for works of service. We also see in Ephesians 6 that fathers are to “bring [children] up I the training and instruction of the Lord. Jesus in Luke’s gospel was “filled with wisdom” and sat at the feet of teachers in the temple listening to them and learning from them and from this “Jesus grew in wisdom.”
There is so much about our faith that can be strengthened and illuminated through learning about all things God (theology)! Our class offerings are available for college credit if you want that, but if not, we gather to learn by iron sharpening iron.
