LifePoint Statement of Faith
We teach that the Holy Scriptures differ from all other books in the world and that they are the Word of God. They are the Word of God because the holy men who wrote the scriptures wrote only what the Holy Spirit communicated to them by inspiration, 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:21. We teach also that the verbal inspiration of the Scriptures is not a so-called “theological deduction,” but that it is taught by direct statements of the Scriptures, 2 Timothy 3:16; John 10:35, Romans 3:2; 1 Corinthians 2:13. Since the Holy Scriptures are the Word of God, it goes without saying that they contain no error or contradictions, but that they are in all their parts and words the infallible truth, also in those parts which speak of historical, geographical, and other secular matters, John 10:35. Furthermore, we teach that the Holy Scriptures were given by God to the Christian Church for the foundation of faith, Ephesians 2:20.
On the basis of the Holy Scriptures we teach the magnificent concept of the Holy Trinity; that is, we teach that the one true God, Deuteronomy 6:4; 1 Corinthians 8:4, is the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, three distinct persons, but of one and the same divine essence, equal in power, equal in eternity, equal in majesty, because each person possesses the one divine essence entirely, Colossians 2:9’ Matthew 28:19. The Triune God is the God who is gracious to man, John 3:16-18; 1 Corinthians 12:3. Since the fall, no man can believe in the “fatherhood” of God except he also believe in the eternal Son of God, who became man and reconciled us to God by His vicarious atonement, 1 John 2:23; John 14:6.
We teach that the first man was not brutish nor merely capable of intellectual development, but that God created man in His own image, Genesis 1:26; Ephesians 4:24; Colossians 3:10, that is, in true knowledge of God and in true righteousness and holiness endowed with a truly scientific knowledge of nature, Genesis 2:19-23. Furthermore, we teach that sin came into the world by the fall of the first man, as described in, Genesis 3. Through his fall he himself, and all future offspring of man lost the original knowledge, righteousness and holiness, thus all men are sinners by birth, dead in sins, inclined to all evil, and subject to the wrath of God, Romans 5:12, 18; Ephesians 2:1-3. We also teach that men are incapable, through any of their own efforts and the aid of culture or science reconcile themselves to God and thereby conquer sin and death.
We teach that in the fullness of time the eternal Son of God was made man by assuming, from the Virgin Mary through the operation of the Holy Ghost, a human nature like unto ours, yet without sin, and receiving it unto His divine person. Jesus Christ is therefore “true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary,” true God and true man in one undivided and indivisible person. The purpose of this miraculous incarnation of the Son of God was that He might become the Mediator between God and men, both fulfilling the divine Law and suffering and dying in the place of mankind. In this manner God reconciled the whole sinful world unto Himself, Galatians 4:4, 5; 3:13; 2 Corinthians 5:18, 19.
Since God has reconciled the whole world unto Himself through the vicarious life and death of His Son and has commanded that the reconciliation effected by Christ be proclaimed to men in the Gospel, to the end that they may believe it, 2 Corinthians 5:18, 19; Romans 1:5, therefore faith in Christ is the only way for men to obtain personal reconciliation with God, that is, forgiveness of sins, as both the Old and the New Testament Scriptures testify, Acts 10:43; John 3:16-18, 36. By this faith in Christ, through which men obtain the forgiveness of sins, is not meant any human effort to fulfill the Law of God after the example of Christ, but faith in the Gospel, that is, in the forgiveness of sins, or justification, which was fully earned for us by Christ and is offered by the Gospel. This faith justifies, not inasmuch as it is a work of man, but inasmuch as it lays hold of the grace offered, the forgiveness of sins, Romans 4:16.
We believe the indwelling Holy Spirit works the regeneration, sanctification and preservation of the Christian. His ministry is to glorify Jesus Christ and empower the believer for godly living and service, Romans 8:2-6; John 14:26. The Holy Spirit, through the proclamation of the gospel, renews our hearts, persuading us to repent of our sins and confess Jesus as Lord. By the same Spirit we are led to trust in divine mercy, whereby we are forgiven all our sins, justified by faith alone through the merit of Christ our Savior, and granted the free gift of eternal life, John 14:15-17.
We believe, teach and confess that the primary mission of the church is to make disciples of every nation by bearing witness to Jesus Christ through the preaching of the Gospel and the administration of the Sacraments, Matthew 28:16-20.Other necessary activities of the church, such as ministering to men’s/women’s physical needs, are to serve the church’s primary mission and its goal that men/women will believe and confess Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. We value and respect all of God’s people, past and present, and desire to partner with other churches in solidarity and unity.
Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is an act of obedience symbolizing the believer’s faith in a crucified, buried, and risen Saviour, the believer’s death to sin, the burial of the old life, and the resurrection to walk in newness of life in Christ Jesus. It is a testimony to his faith in the final resurrection of the dead. Baptism does not bring about salvation, faith in Christ alone is needed to be justified to the Father, Colossians 2:12; Romans 6:3-5. The Lord’s Supper is a symbolic act of obedience whereby members of the church, through partaking of the bread and the fruit of the vine, memorialize the death of the Redeemer and anticipate His second coming. It is our belief that The Lord’s Supper should only be partaken of by those who have accepted Christ’s gift of salvation, as it is an act of remembrance of the sacrifice, it would be heretical to partake without acknowledgement of the what the sacrifice represents, Matthew 26:26-30.
We believe that because God our Creator established marriage as a sacred institution between one man and one woman, the idea that marriage is a covenant only between one man and one woman has been the traditional definition of marriage for all of human history (“Traditional Definition of Marriage”). Because of the longstanding importance of the Traditional Definition of Marriage to humans and their relationships and communities and, most importantly, the fact that God has ordained that marriage between one man and one woman, as clearly conveyed in God’s inerrant Scriptures, including for example in Matthew 19:4-6 where, in speaking about marriage, Jesus referred to the fact that “he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,” the Church hereby creates this policy, which shall be known as the “Marriage Policy.” Under the Marriage Policy, the Traditional Definition of Marriage is the only definition of marriage that will be recognized or accepted in our Church.
Scripture clearly teaches, and we teach accordingly, that the kingdom of Christ on earth will remain under the cross until the end of the world, Acts 14:22; John 16:33; 18:36; Luke 9:23; 14:27; 17:20-37; 2 Timothy 4:18; Hebrews 12:28; Luke 18:8; that the second visible coming of the Lord will be His final advent, His coming to judge the quick and the dead, Matthew 24:29, 30; 25:31; 2 Timothy 4:1; 2 Thessalonians 2:8; Hebrews 9:26-28; that there will be but one resurrection of the dead, John 5:28; 6:39, 40; that the time of the Last Day is, and will remain, unknown, Matthew 24:42; 25:13; Mark 13:32, 37; Acts 1:7, which would not be the case if the Last Day were to come a thousand years after the beginning of a millennium.
